Guying

Shaft bracing

Trees can lose their balance under certain circumstances. This sometimes happens when they have reached a large size. But the best known of all possible stabilizing measures is certainly the stake, a wooden post planted in the ground parallel to a tree, to which it is attached to support it. This method aims to stabilize the plant for the time its roots take to take root and allow it to support itself. Thus, when the wind shakes it or a passerby hits it, it will remain upright. There are many other possible cases, and we will see some of them.

Structural problems

In terms of tree development, urban conditions are much less competitive than those in forests. Plants have much more space to grow. But they also receive sunlight for longer periods of time. As a result, they grow faster. That's a picture that can lead to a loss of stability in the structure of the tree. The top may have grown disproportionately to the low branches, among other possibilities. In any case, whatever the situation, by organizing a technique combining pruning and guying, the tree could regain its balance.

Branches weakened by a storm

Probably we have all witnessed trees damaged by storms. In the forest, the density of the tree population means that breakage following storms is rarer there, compared to urban areas, because lightning, for example, can reach them more easily, since there is usually more space between them. In the forest, the close arrangement of the trees protects them from each other, as it were. In any case, destabilization can occur. If you feel the situation is serious, you may be tempted to have your tree felled without quibbling, because you believe it is inevitable. Except that it may not be. Sometimes a skillful guying can save a tree from the inevitable. Let us take a look at the situation on the spot by joining us at 819-809-6042.

Trees with several trunks

When a tree has more than one trunk, don't think that you are necessarily lucky with a two-for-one. This can be a perilous situation.  First of all, trees compete for space. As each tree grows, each trunk and each branch will expand. Each section will therefore gain distance from the other. This situation makes the area where the trunks meet extremely fragile, to the point where a permanent break can eventually occur.

To avoid the worst, it is important to regularly inspect the trunk crossing area for any cracks. In addition, a crack, as you probably know, is an attraction for insects and disease. And these only increase the risk of a complete break.

Cracks on the trunk

It is therefore very important not to neglect the smallest cracks. Contact a specialist without delay when you see any that seem suspicious. At Emondage Victoriaville, our experience and know-how allow us to accurately assess the situation and propose solutions that are appropriate to the circumstances. If it is possible to prevent your tree from being cut down, by guying or pruning, we will let you know.

The branch at the bottom of the tree

The branches at the bottom of the trees are generally wider than those at the top. You may have noticed this, but do you know why it happens? It's a question of access to light. The tallest branches obviously use the first ones. The base would be deprived of it if it didn't build a way to receive it too. Now, nature being what it is, it has indeed found one: the lower branches stretch out in width so that they too can absorb their vital dose of light. Except that this natural play may end up causing a loss of stability. So, a guying done by connoisseurs allows the plant concerned to benefit from a support, while it recovers, and thus avoid a pruning, or drastic cut, of the lower branches.
